Get your smart meter data
Your smart meter records how much electricity you use every 30 minutes. That data is yours, and getting it lets us model your usage accurately instead of guessing.
The easiest way is usually through your retailer's app. If your retailer isn't listed below, or you'd prefer to go direct, you can also request it from your distribution network.
What format do I need?
Our preference is NEM12, the industry-standard format that contains your full half-hourly history. We also accept the Origin usage CSV and AGL usage CSV time-series formats. If your retailer offers both, pick NEM12. CDR data access is coming soon.
From your retailer app
The quickest path for most people. Find your retailer below.
Two options: NEM12 by email (recommended) or instant usage CSV.
- 1Open the Origin app and go to the Usage tab (bar-chart icon at the bottom)
- 2Scroll to the bottom of the usage screen
- 3Tap "Your usage data" → "Request data"
- 4Origin emails you a NEM12 file. Usually arrives within a few hours.
- 5Come back and upload that file here
This is the format that gives you the most accurate results. The file comes as a .csv attachment and contains your full half-hourly history.
- 1Open the Origin app and go to the Usage tab
- 2Scroll to "Your usage data" → "Download CSV"
- 3The file downloads to your phone immediately
- 4Share or transfer it to your device, then upload here
This is a time-series usage CSV, a different layout to NEM12 but works fine with our tool. Use this if you don't want to wait for the email.
Instant download on the AGL website; NEM12 by email takes up to 10 business days.
- 1Go to my.agl.com.au and log in (not the AGL app; this is web only)
- 2Click the "Usage" tab at the top
- 3Click the download icon (top right of the usage chart)
- 4A ZIP file downloads. Open it to find a CSV of your interval data
- 5Upload the CSV here
AGL's download is a proprietary CSV format, not standard NEM12. Our tool handles it, but if you get any errors, try the NEM12 email request instead.
- 1Email meterdatarequests@agl.com.au with your NMI (from your bill) and the date range you want
- 2Or use the online form at agl.com.au/campaigns/request-metering-data
- 3AGL emails you the NEM12 file. Allow up to 10 business days.
The formal NEM12 is the most precise format. Worth requesting if you can wait, or if the instant download doesn't work.
No in-app download. You need to make a formal request. Allow 5–10 business days.
- 1Email Type5MeterData@energyaustralia.com.au with your NMI (from your bill) and the date range you want
- 2Or use the online form: energyaustralia.com.au/home/bills-and-accounts/understand-your-bill/energy-usage-data-request
- 3Specify that you want NEM12 CSV format
- 4Energy Australia will email you the file. Usually 5–10 business days.
Energy Australia's app only shows usage charts. There's no download button. The formal email request is currently the only way to get your raw interval data.
My retailer isn't listed
Most other retailers (Alinta, Red Energy, Simply Energy, etc.) don't have a download option in their apps yet. Your best option is to request the data directly from your distribution network (see the section below). Alternatively, if your retailer has a CDR-enabled app, try the “Manage your data” or “Usage data” section.
From your distribution network
You have a legal right to request your interval data free of charge from your network operator, regardless of your retailer. Your network (distributor) is printed on your electricity bill and is different from the retailer you pay.
Not sure which network you're on? Enter your postcode and we'll tell you. Or check the top of your electricity bill. The network name is in small print near the NMI.
- 1Go to the Ausgrid customer portal (link below)

- 2Sign in or register with your NMI and meter number
- 3Navigate to "My Energy" or "Meter Data"

I can't get a meter data file
No smart meter, long wait time, or just want a quick estimate? You can still use the calculator with a manual profile. Pick your household size and usage pattern and we'll estimate your savings. Results are less precise but still give you a useful ballpark.
