Already have solar? Your panels already give you free or cheap energy in the middle of the day, so a free-midday plan adds less value than it does for a household without solar. Where do I get my meter data?
You have two options. A smart meter data file (NEM12 format) is the most accurate: a standardised file with your meter's half-hourly readings, available free from your distribution network's customer portal. Alternatively, most retailers (Origin, AGL, Energy Australia and others) let you export a CSV of your usage from their app or online account. That works too.
What are free-midday plans?
Plans like GloBird's FOUR4FREE offer free electricity during a window in the middle of the day (typically 10am–2pm). They're designed to soak up surplus solar generation on the grid. The catch: you only benefit if you're actually using or storing electricity then.
What is the Solar Sharer Offer?
A federal scheme launching 1 July 2026 in NSW, SA and SE QLD. It requires all electricity retailers to offer at least one plan with 3+ hours of free midday electricity. The free window is typically 11am–2pm or 11am–3pm depending on the retailer.
I'm in Victoria. When does this apply to me?
Victoria has its own mandated version called the Midday Power Saver, launching 1 October 2026. The free window is 11am–2pm daily (times don't shift with daylight saving). It's available through all retailers on the Victorian Default Offer. You'll need to opt in. Around 2.6 million Victorian households with smart meters will be eligible. Projected savings range from $149 to $1,102 per year depending on how much usage you can shift to the free window. One catch: off-peak rates outside the free window are slightly higher on these plans than on standard flat-rate offers, so households that can't shift much usage may not come out ahead.
Do I need solar panels to benefit?
No. That's the point. Free-midday plans are designed for everyone, including renters and apartment dwellers who can't install solar. The free window exists because the grid has surplus cheap solar during those hours.
Is this really free to use?
Yes. We don't take referral fees from retailers. Our revenue comes from the Accurassi platform's enterprise partners (energy networks, solar/battery installers, energy retailers, 3rd party comparison sites, governments), not from pushing you to particular plans.
